a short time ago a bomb exploded aboard a bus in tel aviv across the street from israel's military headquarters. 16 people were injured. police say this was not a suicide attack. secretary of state hillary clinton is negotiating right this moment in an attempt to work out a truce to stop the violence in israel and gaza. nbc's chapman bell joins us on the phone now from tel aviv. chapman, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, lynn. at this point this bus attack is being described as a terrorist attack. it says it has all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack, but it is not a suicide bomber that police officials can confirm. it seems explosives were placed on a bus in tel aviv. this is the first bus blast in israel since 2004, the last one being on a bus in the southern israeli city of bare shea but near gaza. if this is connected to the current conflicted, there's no confirmation at this point that it is, but this would show a change in tactics from the current tactics being used which is rocket launches from gaza into israel. this comes as secretary of state

and israel launched some of the most aggressive assaults yet. the latest develops and how the bay area is reacting next in "world tonight." >>> there's talk of a possible trurks but right now more violence in the middle east. >> we have team coverage this evening. we have local reaction to the crisis in the middle east. we begin with janelle with the latest developments in our "world tonight." >> there was lots of hope today in the middle east as reports of a truce between israel and hamas, the militant organization that rules the gaza strip. but that hope quickly faded as the region saw some of the heaviest shelling yet. just in the past few hours israel launched an aggressive missile assault on gaza city. they say it's in response to the rocket attacks by hamas. secretary of state hillary clinton cut her asia trip with president obama short to fly to the middle east to help broker a truce. she just wrapped up a meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in jerusalem. later today she'll meet with the palestinian president and then fly to egypt to meet with mohammed morsi.

from earlier today when we heard a deal was made between israel and hamas, the militant group that rules the gaza strip. but that deal is still being negotiated. secretary of state hillary clinton flew to jerusalem today to help broke they're truce. she met with benjamin netanyahu and also also meet with palestinian president mahmoud abbas. this situation is being watched closely by a lot of people here in the bay area. for more on that, let's bring in nbc bay area's jodi hernandez who joins us from emeryville. jodi? >> reporter: raj, there are a lot of folks here in the bay area who have friends and family members either in israel or in the gaza strip. they are very worried by what is happening there. now, we got a taste today of what folks in that area are going through. as you mentioned, it is a region that is still very much under fire tonight. we caught up with the residents of gaza via skype this afternoon. a woman who has been praying for a ceasefire. but judging by the shelling outside her house, it hadn't taken hold yet. >> i was feeling relief when i hear about the c
